  • The Bible (from the Greek "τα βιβλία", ta biblía, meaning "the books") is the collection of canonical books in Judaism and Christianity. The canonicity of each book varies depending on the adopted tradition. According to the Jewish and Christian religions, it conveys the word of God. The Bible has been translated into 2303 languages.
  • The Bible is a compilation of texts that were initially separate documents (called "books"), written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek over a long period of time and later gathered to form the Tanakh (or Old Testament for Christians) and then the New Testament. Both testaments make up the Christian Bible. The texts that make up the Bible were written over approximately 1000 years (from 900 BC to 100 AD). The oldest texts are found in the Book of Judges ("Song of Deborah") and in the so-called "E" (Elohist tradition) and "J" (Yahwist tradition) sources of the Torah (called the Pentateuch by Christians), which are dated to the time of the two kingdoms (10th to 8th centuries BC).
  • The oldest complete book, Hosea, is also from the same period. The Jewish people identify the Bible with the Tanakh, not accepting under any circumstances the term Old Testament and not accepting the validity of the so-called New Testament, recognizing the Tanakh as their only sacred text.
  • The canon of the Bible we know today was sanctioned by the Catholic Church, under the pontificate of St. Damasus I, in the Synod of Rome in the year 382, and this version is the one translated into Latin by Jerome of Stridon. This canon consists of 73 books: 46 constituting the so-called Old Testament, including 7 books currently called Deuterocanonical (Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, and Baruch) - which have been contested by Jews and Protestants - and 27 of the New Testament. It was confirmed at the Council of Hippo in 393 and ratified at the III Council of Carthage in 397 and IV Council of Carthage in 419.
  • When Protestant reformers challenged it, the Catholic canon was again confirmed by decree at the fourth session of the Council of Trent on April 8, 1546. None of these decisions were recognized or adopted by many Protestants who emerged from the 16th century onwards, nor by different denominations linked to Protestantism that arose from the 19th century onwards. The canon of Orthodox Christian Bibles is even broader than that of Roman Catholic Bibles and includes Psalm 151, the Prayer of Manasseh, Book III of Esdras, and Book III of Maccabees. In addition to these, Book IV of Esdras and Book IV of Maccabees also appear as appendices in many important versions and editions of the Orthodox Christian Bible.
  • The Old Testament mainly narrates the history of the Hebrews, and the New Testament narrates the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, His message, and the history of the early Christians. The New Testament was written in Koine Greek. It frequently quotes the Old Testament from the Septuagint version, a Greek translation of the Old Testament made in Alexandria (Egypt) in the 3rd century BC.
